Curfew Soil Fumigant®Unlike most other turfgrass pesticides, Curfew® (1,3-dichloropropene) is injected into the soil profile as a liquid, which then volatilizes and flows through the soil as a gas (fumigant). As a result, Curfew® is highly effective against sting nematodes (Belonolaimus), stubby-root nematodes (Trichodorus and Nanidorus), spiral nematodes (Helicotylenchus), ring nematodes (Mesocriconema), and migratory lance (Hoplolaimus) and root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne), as well as mole crickets active at the application site.
Per the label, Curfew® applications are performed by trained and approved custom applicators. While application equipment for greens is slightly different from that used on fairways, the application method is similar. A swept knife with a metal drip tube is injected 5-6 inches deep into the soil profile. Curfew® is introduced as the blades are drawn through the soil, delivering the chemical nematicide into the root zone. Water is immediately applied to the area, which aids in sealing the slits and reducing fumigant loss. The water also acts as a catalyst, converting the 1,3-D to a gas that permeates the soil profile and kills nematodes on contact. Improved root growth will be visible 4 to 8 weeks after application if proper post-app fertility cultural practices are followed. Curfew® applications are recommended once a year in conjunction with other topical nematicides and should be scheduled through your current chemical distributor. Nematode ControlThis photo shows a comparison of the roots of 3 samples only 3 weeks after application. Turf treated with Curfew® has considerably stronger, deeper root development (left) than the two samples on the right, treated with a competing product (middle) and untreated (right).
After an application of Curfew®, turf managers will see healthier, enhanced root development, and better looking turf. The increased root mass helps maintain the turf quality, especially during times of drought. Studies have shown that treated turf requires 30% - 50% less irrigation, and utilizes all nutrients from applied fertilizer. Less water and fertilizer are important factors in today’s environmentally conscious world, as well as helping to reduce expenses. Curfew® also controls Mole Crickets present in the treated area at the time of application. |
